Intensive Course of the Osaka YMCA Japanese Language School

SUMMARY

This is a 2-week summer intensive course starting at the end of July going through the middle of August. Tourist visa (90-day stay) sufficient.
5 classes are available for levels ranging beginner through intermediate, and the objective is to help students to acquire speaking skills. Materials used in these classes were specifically designed for this course and create an enjoyable time studying Japanese. Students not only study but go out to experience Japanese culture by traveling around Osaka and meeting Japanese people in programs organized by YMCA. These programs help students to gain a better understanding of Japan. Homestay is available for those who request it.

    OBJECTIVE

    Level 1

    ☆for first time learners of Japanese
    ☆for people who can’t read hiragana

    ★will learn to read and write hirgana and katakana.
    ★will learn to give a self-introduction
    ★will be able to tell time, use numbers, use everyday verbs

    Level 2

    ☆can say greetings, introduce oneself, talk about hobbies, family, likes and dislikes
    ☆can read hiragana and katakana but can not write either fluently

    ★will be able to write all hiragana and katakana fluently
    ★will be able to comfortably shopping, eat at restaurants, ask for directions and catch taxis

    Level 3

    ☆can take hiragana and katakana dictation fluently
    ☆can communicate at a low level about necessities in daily life

    ★will learn katakana vocabulary and about 150 kanji
    ★will be able to use simple Japanese to convey feelings and exchange opinions with others

    Level 4

    ☆can listen to Japanese and write it down accurately incorporating kanji.
    ☆can get by in everyday Japanese, but vocabulary is still limited

    ★will master katakana, will learn 120 new kanji (new total 220)
    ★will be able to write short notes and letters in Japanese

    Level 5

    ☆can understand most of the intermediate level texts but does not have mastery of the material
    ☆wants to increase vocabulary and be able to communicate more freely

    ★will learn to use keigo (formal Japanese)
    ★will learn 130 kanji (total approx. 350)
    ★will be able to compile thoughts about a particular topic and make a presentation. Will also be able to give detailed talk about country of origin: lifestyle, workplace, school, family life, national issues, culture etc.

INTENSIVE JAPANESE LANGUAGE STUDY

classjapanese cultureStudents will be appropriately placed in classes for beginner to intermediate level. Students will learn to communicate in actual situations: travel, shopping, everyday matters. Classes are conducted for 5 hours every day and though the program is short, the classes start with the basics. You can enjoy your learning experience with your classmates from around the world.




Let’s get to know Japanese culture!

Students will have the chance to experience traditional Japanese culture by participating in tea ceremony, flower arrangement, Japanese calligraphy and the trendy art of kimono dressing. Competent Japanese volunteer instructors will explain the events as they are performed. Students will be able to experience traditional Japan and understand the heart of Japanese people through these cultural experiences. Activities are optional.

Travel and Outdoor programs

During the day camp, students will have the opportunity to participate in many exciting activities such as canoeing and kayaking. No doubt, when the 2-week program is finished, each student will have precious memories of the new friendships built with Japanese people and their worlds will have expanded a bit!



HOMESTAY / CROSS-CULTURAL EXCHANGE

For many participants, communicating with people of another culture is a common desire. One special feature of this program is the opportunity to participate in a homestay. As the word conveys, this is a time to become as a family member in a Japanese home.
